Green Up Day began in April 1970 and continues today as a unique Vermont tradition, bringing out thousands of volunteers throughout the state to remove litter and trash from our roadways, waterways and public places.

Green Up Day will occur on Saturday, May 5, 2018.

2018 marks the 48th anniversary of the event!

How it works

Green Up Day is coordinated state-wide by Green Up Vermont, a private non-profit organization.  Funding for this organization comes from many sources, including the State of Vermont, private businesses and individuals, and voluntary donations from towns and cities.

Each town and city appoints or recruits a Green Up Day Coordinator. The main role of the local coordinator is to distribute posters and bags (provided by Green Up Vermont), recruit volunteer teams, identify areas to clean up, arrange for transportation of litter and track basic statistics.

Get Involved!

Visit the Green Up Vermont website or call (802) 229-4586 to get in touch with your local Green Up Day coordinator. (See the Green Up Day Town Contact list for more information.)

CSWD & Green Up Day

The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) supports Green Up Day with an annual donation of $4,050 to Green Up Vermont in the name of our member towns and cities. We also cover the recycling costs of the tires we receive from official Green Up Day town collections.

Special thanks to Casella Waste Systems for their support and for covering the costs of verified Green Up Day litter disposal.

Drop-Off Information for Coordinators & Road Crew

During Green Up Day, all materials must be dropped off at sites designated by each town’s Green Up Day Coordinator. Contact your Coordinator for more information. Once collected, Coordinators or road crew may drop off materials at the following locations. All Green-Up Day associated waste must be dropped off by Monday, May 7. If you are unable to meet this deadline, please contact CSWD at 802-872-8111 or Casella at (802) 864-3615 to make special arrangements for dropping off your load.
