See the Willy Wonka factory of the recycling world. What happens to all those mandatory recyclables after they leave your blue bin? Learn about the recycling industry and watch this essential and fascinating step in “closing the loop.”

Green Mountain Compost (GMC)

Where food scraps, yard trimmings, and even paper towels, napkins and pizza boxes become healthy soil in a matter of months. Get the dirt on a facility that incorporates leading technology gleaned from around the country—built right here in Williston.

Available: Monday through Friday only, year ‘round, weather permitting

Age requirements: Tour participants must be at least 8 years old.

Appropriate for: 2nd grade +

Min. group size: 6 people

Max. group size: 25 people

Times: Tour start times offered between 8:30 and 2:30 pm.

How is all that unwanted hazardous skull n’ crossbones-type stuff in your kitchen, garage, and basement managed? Learn why paint and hazardous cleaners, stains and other nasty stuff can’t go in your trash, why you want to minimize your purchase and use of hazardous items, and what happens to leftovers at the Depot and beyond.

Available: December 1st thru March 31st: Tuesday through Friday.  April 1st– November 30th:  Thursdays only.

Age requirements: Tour participants must be at least 12 years old.

Appropriate for: 6th grade +

Min. group size: 6 people

Max. group size: 25 people

Times: Varies with Depot schedule and staff availability.

Williston Drop-off Center and Special Waste Facility

You know about the blue bin. You may know about composting. What about recycling fridges, batteries, tires, and electronics? The Drop-Off Center shows just how little we actually need to landfill.
