Hazardous Waste

Household Hazardous Waste includes any unused product that is poisonous, reactive, corrosive, or flammable. Look for keywords on the label such as Warning! Danger! Poison! Caution!

DO NOT pour hazardous waste down the drain or put it in the trash. Both are illegal and will harm our water, animal life, human health, and the environment in general.

Here’s a partial list of common household waste we accept at the CSWD Environmental Depot.

Residential Disposal Options

Hazardous Waste from Households

The CSWD Environmental Depot is open to Chittenden County residentsyear round by appointment only. No fees for Chittenden County residents who do not meet one of the exceptions noted.

Fees may apply if:

  • You are not a Chittenden County resident 
  • You have more than 20 gallons 
  • You have certain special items that are expensive/difficult for us to manage

Residents with more than 20 gallons must call the business appointment line.

Fuel containers containing more than 5 gallons must be left overnight for pickup the following business day. Containers smaller than 5 gallons will be emptied and returned during your visit.

The Rover – CSWD’s Hazardous Waste Mobile Unit

The Rover, CSWD’s mobile household hazardous waste collection unit, accepts a wide variety of household hazardous waste at no charge from Chittenden County residents – BUSINESS WASTE IS NOT ACCEPTED.

CSWD provides the Rover as a service to residents who cannot make the trip to the Environmental Depot, our permanent hazardous waste collection facility located in South Burlington.

Chittenden County businesses and institutions qualifying as Very Small Quantity Generators may use the Environmental Depot.
