Are you a rampant recycler?
Do you carry your banana peel home when you can’t find a compost bin?
Are you on a mission to reduce waste and spread good fun in the process?
If so, we want you! We’re looking for friendly, enthusiastic, volunteer Waste Warriors to help bring our waste reduction mission to life at Chittenden County events.
Becoming a CSWD Waste Warrior is easy! Start by coming to a free training session where you’ll meet like-minded neighbors and learn how you can help improve recycling and composting efforts at events. At the one-and-a-half hour training, you’ll learn:
- How to determine what goes into recycling and composting containers (It’s not always as easy as you think – there are a lot of different kinds of materials and products out there!)
- How to communicate with attendees in ways that help them learn
- How to help an event up their game in making sure as much as possible stays out of the landfill
- And more!
You’ll be eligible to volunteer at local events such as farmers’ markets, festivals, and concerts as soon as you’ve completed the training. Volunteers receive free admission to event sites, small tokens of appreciation from event organizers, and the satisfaction of knowing that they’ve made a difference!

Be friendly, helpful, and cheerful. Let event attendees catch your enthusiasm! Smile and make eye contact, offer to help people figure out where things belong, thank people for their efforts. Avoid negative words like “no” or “don’t”; use positive language instead: “Actually, next time that can go in the recycling bin.” or “Did you know that’s actually compostable?” Focus on education. Resist the urge to spend your whole shift fixing…
