CSWD Partners with Vermont Language Justice Project to Create ‘How-To Recycle Right’ Videos in 15 Languages

The Chittenden Solid Waste District (CSWD) has partnered with the Vermont Language Justice Project (VLJP) to produce a new series of “How-To Recycle Right” videos, now available in 15 different languages. This initiative is designed to ensure that all residents—regardless of the language they speak—have access to clear, accurate information about how to recycle properly in Chittenden County.
The video series is available in the following languages: Arabic, American Sign Language (ASL), English, Burmese, Dari, French, Kirundi, Mandarin, Maay Maay, Nepali, Pashto, Spanish, Somali, Swahili, and Vietnamese.
“Language should never stand in the way of environmental stewardship,” said Sarah Reeves, Executive Director of CSWD. “We’re proud to partner with the Vermont Language Justice Project to ensure that everyone in our community—regardless of their primary language—has access to the information they need to recycle right. Clear, inclusive communication is key to helping us reduce contamination, protect natural resources, and ensure that every resident of Chittenden County can do their part with confidence.”
The short instructional videos guide viewers through CSWD’s blue bin recycling guidelines, helping to reduce contamination and improve the quality of recyclables collected throughout the region. Each version is tailored to the language and cultural context of its intended audience, making the message both clear and engaging.
“We were proud to work with CSWD on this meaningful and practical project,” said Alison Segar, Project Director at the Vermont Language Justice Project. “Access to environmental information in your first language not only empowers individuals to take action—it also builds more inclusive and resilient communities.”
This project is part of CSWD’s broader effort to ensure equity and inclusivity in all of its outreach and education programs. It also presents a powerful opportunity to partner with local housing organizations, community centers, and refugee and immigrant services to share these tools directly with residents who need them most.
“The new ‘Recycling 101’ videos in 15 languages produced by Vermont Language Justice Project in partnership with CSWD is a great resource for our communities,” said Suey Howe, resident engagement manager at Champlain Housing Trust. “We look forward to sharing the videos with residents of Champlain Housing Trust’s homes and apartments.”
